If you own property in Portugal, or are thinking about buying a home here, you could be affected by new tax rules for 2017. This year has seen the introduction of a ‘wealth tax’ in the form of an additional tax on higher-value properties. The government has also revised how it determines whether residents should be penalised for using ‘tax havens’.

Portugal within the 20th safest countries in the world 2017

World Economic Forum ranked 136 countries in its biennial tourism report with one section focusing on safety. Portugal took the 11th position. On the 1st position is Finland followed by the United Arab Emirates and Iceland named least risky places for tourists to visit and Oman took fourth place, followed closely by Hong Kong, Singapore and Norway in fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively. Switzerland scored eighth, Rwanda soared to ninth and Qatar rounded out the top ten.
